WHAT IS AMPHIBIOUS BOATING?
Amphibious boats allow you to move effortlessly between land and water, giving you freedom from ramps, trailers, and busy marinas. Built from the ground up around your use, a custom amphibious boat can open access to places many boats simply cannot reach. Every StabiX starts with understanding the owner. How you spend your time on the water, where you launch, who comes with you, and the conditions you regularly face all shape the design.
This page outlines the benefits, responsibilities, and practical considerations of amphibious ownership — and helps you decide whether amphibious or non‑amphibious (we do those too) is right for you.
BENEFITS
✕ Freedom of launch & retrieval – Launch and retrieve directly from beaches, riverbanks, driveways, and remote shorelines—without relying on ramps, changing tides, marinas, or assistance.
✕ Independence - Amphibious capability allows you to operate entirely on your own schedule, removing the need for trailers, tow vehicles, or another set of hands.
✕ Time efficiency - Spend less time organising launches/trailers and more time on the water, with fast transitions between land and water at the start and end of every trip.
✕ Accessibility – Amphibious systems can be lowered to allow boarding while on land, making access easier and more inclusive for families and those with mobility considerations.
✕ Versatility – amphibious allows you to go further, no need to anchor or dock, provides peace of mind / confidence in changeable conditions.
LIMITATIONS
While amphibious boats offer significant freedom and convenience, there are practical considerations and trade‑offs worth understanding before choosing one.
✕ Terrain – Can have difficulties in very soft stones and cannot handle a gradient steeper than 14 degrees.
✕ Weight – While the wheel system contributes an increase in overall weight, it is designed for optimal balance and efficiency
✕ Towing –our 20ft & 24ft models can be towed by a ‘regular’ vehicle, larger models will require a RAM style vehicle, capable of towing XXT.
✕ Trailing – custom trailers are required for towing amphibious boats and can be quoted at time of enquiry.
MAINTENANCE
Amphibious systems are robust, but like any mechanical system, they require care and regular servicing.
✕ General care – after use, thoroughly flush all salt water from the boat and outboard
✕ Annual servicing must be carried out by an authorised agent on the wheel system
FAQS
-
An amphibious boat launches and retrieves itself using an integrated wheel system, removing the need for a trailer, ramp, or tow vehicle.
-
Very. They remove the need for docking and trailering, and significantly reduce risks around changing conditions, tides, and loading or unloading.
-
The boat remains fully operational on the water. Like any mechanical component, redundancy and safe‑use procedures are built into ownership planning.
-
In most cases, no. Some owners choose to keep a trailer for long‑distance transport, but it’s not required for day‑to‑day use.
-
Amphibious systems are designed to be intuitive, and owners are guided through operation as part of delivery and handover.
-
Yes. One of the key benefits is the ability to launch, retrieve, and manoeuvre the boat independently.
-
Absolutely. Amphibious capability does not limit how the boat is set up—it expands where it can be used.
-
No, provided the system is properly rinsed, maintained, and serviced as recommended after saltwater use.
-
No license, and training on using the amphibious system is covered in the handover process.
